“That’s thirteen,” Jaco muttered as he pulverized a Skeleton’s skull. The young man glanced around at the remaining undead attacking him. All of the Skeletons in this group of nine were Level 20.

But they were just the second encounter of the last… day? Several hours? Undetermined time between power naps? It was still hard to tell without anyone else around to ground his internal clock. In any case, he’d already killed a few other similar-Level undead since his last break.

The Druid spun around to smash through the head of a Skeleton before it could hit him. Fourteen. The last remaining pair charged at him side by side. They were still a few dozen feet from Jaco, giving him plenty of time to enact a two-for-one deal.

He raised two walls of stone. Then just as the pair of undead ran into the space between these walls, he willed for the earth to slam together and swiftly crush the Skeletons.

And with that, his kill count since his last break had reached a total of sixteen undead. The young man had been hard at work, but progress remained painfully slow. Even closer to the innermost parts of the city, where monsters were more commonly in the late teens or early twenties, the problem was too many low-Level foes.

Ever since his close call with the Minotaur, he’d killed plenty more undead than just the sixteen from this current hunt. But even so, he’d still yet to gain enough Experience for another Level. And with an unknown timer above his head until the Chosen Few inevitably found the camp of survivors, Jaco was steadily becoming more and more impatient.

I need to find more stuff that’s actually at my Level or is a bit higher than it. That’s the only reasonable method of getting more EXP. Because at this rate it’ll just take too long to hit 29, much less Level 30, and enter the likely minimum requirement for evolving my Class. But where are the undead actually near my Level? Jaco asked himself.

He’d seen plenty within the low 20s, ranging from Level 20 to 23. As well as a few within the midrange of 24 to 26. But as for the high 20s around his current Level? There were nada, zip, zero. It was as if there were some invisible gap in the power structure of the monsters he’d seen so far, where they just skipped past the late 20s and jumped straight into Level 30.

Even if I haven’t seen any yet, they’re probably somewhere out there. If the base Skeletons in the inner city are Level 20, then it’d be the Mages that should at least match my Level. But as far as the ratio of Mages to normal undead, it so far seems like it’s the same as the outskirts. The Druid considered how since his first encounter with a Mage, he’d still only met and killed about half a dozen in total.

Hmm. But even if I keep my ears open for every group of Skeletons, I’ll tear through dozens for every single Mage I find.
